Located approximately 78 miles from New York City, Westhampton Beach is known as "The First Hampton." Westhampton Beach was first settled in 1666 as part of the Quogue Purchase. Its first real estate boom occured in 1675 when buying land there for investment purposes became popular. In 1870, the newly constructed Long Island Railroad brought travelers to the town of Westhampton Beach and soon the practice of renting out rooms by residents began. It was not long before the Hamptons caught on as a summer resort area. Westhampton Beach, incorporated in 1928, includes a land area of 2.9 suare miles, surface water of 0.72 square miles, and a population of 1,902 (2000 U.S. Census). The Village of Westhampton Beach is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, Moniebogue Bay and Quantuck Bay. There are many outdoor activities to enjoy in Westhampton Beach from golf, tennis, boating, fishing, horseback riding, to surfing and kayaking.
